Imagine lush mangroves, romantic background music and about two dozen good looking members of the opposite sex. They're hoping to attract large congregations of the birds and re-establish once popular nesting spots in the mangrove limbs of sites like Lakes Passage and Marquesas Keys. While this project is new for the Frigatebirds, scientists think it will work due to their social nature. The most recent population study estimates the herd at 900 to 1,000.
The Citizen reported that scientists from the agency have set up 20 to 30 plastic life-like Frigatebirds with bright red pouches and a sound system that repeats the amorous, but often screeching, mating calls in a series of dating hotspots located on the Key West National Wildlife Refuge. Fish and Wildlife Service say the birds have only laid eggs in the Dry Tortugas in recent decades and there is concern that the environment there might not be able to accommodate enough nesting locations to sustain the local frigatebird population. But the creation of the National Key Deer Refuge on Big Pine Key and protection under the Endangered Species Act have led to a comeback.

Hope you have a good time, Jules I was down there a few years ago and found a great little out door patio-dock bar which provided some of the best music that I have ever heard. There are a couple of things that you have to try in Key West:1)Sunset at the pier: It is probably when of the best sites in Key West and there is always live music and people dancing. I have not been there in a couple of months, but there are always festivals going on and sometimes it is just great to sit back and watch the people go by. ) Saw a drag show, went fishing, went on a kayak tour of one of the protected islands, went to mallory square and watched the crazies and the beautiful sunset, ate some great fresh seafood-grouper and snapper and dolphin yum yum, got drunk and burnt by the pool one day, did a half day spa treatment, did a 2 reef dive, went fishing, and got puking wasted during a late night where I visited the lazy gecko, the half shell raw bar, kevins irish pub, sloppy joes, hogs breath saloon, the garden of eden, the whistle stop, the raging bull bar, cheeseburger key west, and the tiki bar at the resort followed by 2 hrs of drinking on our balcony.
The bar is called, The Warf Dog Saloon, and the singer was Michael Mc Cloud, very talented and entertaining ( Jimmy Buffet type). Not to mention all of the restaurants and bars that are around the pier.2)Scuba day trips or snorkel is always a great option with many different dive sites available for reefs to ship wrecks.3) If you like history, there are tours of historical Key West such as the light house, old counting house.4) For a good breakfast, you should try a place called Blue Heaven. My favorite bar was sloppy joes, cliche but they had a very fun band that played everyones favorite songs and got the whole crowd involved. :) thanks for your suggestions, the keys have been a lot of fun :)I'm jealous! Good to see you crammed alot of stuff into the trip. I go to the keys almost every fall, and key west has the least appeal of them all. And if you have a boat and can get there on your own then GO...are you waiting for.
Birdwatchers will be scanning the skies and counting birds in the Middle Keys every day until Nov. When he was young, Jim Hale told a friend he was going to move to Key West and become "the pigeon king." His friend, a budding comedian, thought that was an excellent joke. He did move to the Keys, 30 years ago, and he started keeping and breeding racing pigeons.
He's been successful with that, and he's got an unexpected sideline: rescuing the racing pigeons that wind up in the Keys after they're blown off course from Cuba.
But if you like the bar scene then you'll have a good time there.
